PEER is held at different locations throughout Australia each year, and welcomes all young people aged 12-17 who’ve experienced cancer themselves or in their family.
Therapeutic sessions give young people the opportunity to explore the emotional impact of their cancer experience and learn new ways to cope. The program also provides opportunities for fun, connection with other young people and a break from the daily reality of cancer.
PEER is open to all young people aged 12-17 year-olds dealing with their own diagnosis, a close family member’s cancer or the death of a loved one.
Canteen runs PEER programs all over Australia. Check out what events are on near you or get in touch to find out when the next one is running, by calling 1800 226 833, email [email protected] or fill in this quick referral form.
It's a 3 days, 2 nights program.
All Canteen programs are completely free to attend. Travel, meals, dorm-style accommodation and activities are all included.

Outcomes of PEER
Canteen is committed to undertaking high quality research and evaluation that enhances our knowledge, understanding and insight into the needs of young people living with cancer and the most effective ways of supporting them.
The latest evaluation of the PEER program found that young people who participated reported:
- Improved awareness of practical strategies for problem-solving and more effectively deal with challenges.
- A stronger sense of connection, feeling less alone in their experience after being able to share their cancer journey with those who understand.
- They were able to take a break, connect with others, and enjoy moments of fun.
What our young people say
“It really helped me reflect on my thoughts and how I am able to support myself and others who deal with cancer or problems in general.”
“I really enjoyed the experience, especially being able to dive deeper into our cancer experiences and the emotions that come with it.”
